The first goal was scored in the 7th minute by Steevan Santos, who received a long through ball played over the top and finished it with a low and driven shot past LUFC goalkeeper Colin Miller. The second goal came minutes later when a low cross from Robbie Mertz that was tapped in by Lukas Fernandes.
The rest of the first half saw the Red-and-White claim the majority of possession as the front three of Alioune Ndour, Abdoul Amoustapha, and Peabo Doue created numerous goalscoring chances. Unfortunately, LUFC were unable to finish the opportunities with a goal. At the end of the first half, Nelson Martinez picked up a second yellow for a late tackle in the defensive third which resulted in the Red-and-White playing the remainder of the match with 10 men.
Despite being a man down, Loudoun United FC continued to push forward and create chances in the second half. Head Coach Ryan Martin’s substitutes Jeremy Garay, Josh Fawole, Brandon Williamson, Eramuse Momoh, and Mike Gamble continued to apply pressure, but unfortunately the Red-and-White were unable to find a break through. Martin will be pleased with his team’s defensive determination in the second half as they kept the high-flying Pittsburgh Riverhounds off the scoresheet.
