The Match Up
Loudoun United FC are back on the road this weekend to faceoff against Ottawa Fury FC after they held the Tampa Bay Rowdies to a draw and completed their first shutout in team history. Loudoun will be looking to achieve their first win of the season as they continue their road stretch ahead of playing their first home match at Audi Field on May 3.
The Fury have played three matches in 2019 and currently sit in 13th in the Eastern Conference. Their first match of the season against Charleston Battery ended in a 1-1 draw, followed by a 1-0 win against Birmingham Legion FC in Week 2. The team enters the USL Championship Week 6 with 4 points after their most recent 3-0 loss against Nashville SC on April 6.
Last season, Ottawa Fury FC goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau set a regular-season USL Championship record with 15 shutouts. That defensive work was canceled out by an attack that scored only 31 goals in 34 games, the second least in the league that year. That lack of attacking firepower led the team to a 10th place finish in the Eastern Conference. The biggest challenge for Head Coach Nikola Popovic will be to improve the club’s offensive production in 2019.
Players to Watch
Forward Carl Haworth has been part of the club since it was a member of USL League Two in 2013. He now enters his sixth professional season with Ottawa Fury FC. Haworth scored the lone goal in the match up against Birmingham Legion FC in Week 2, leading the Fury to their first win of the season.
Forward Kevin Oliveira, the Cape Verde international, had a slightly underwhelming first year in his debut season in Ottawa. The 22-year-old scored four goals and two assists despite making a career-high 31 appearances for Fury FC in the regular season. Oliveira had the first goal of the season, ending the match in a draw against Charleston Battery in Week 1. He has recorded five shots on goal in three appearances this season.
