Black History Month is not something Ezra Armstrong sees as confined to a single moment on the calendar. For him, it is an opportunity to slow down and reflect on the history, people, and experiences that continue to shape both his life and the world around him.
“It is a time of reflection and gratitude for me,” Armstrong said. “I think Black history is really American history as a whole, and it should be included whenever we’re teaching about American history, not just highlighted during one month.”
That belief did not come from one lesson or a single turning point. It developed over time through conversations and relationships that helped him better understand where he comes from and where he is going.
Learning Through Community
Armstrong credits the influence of elders in his community as a major source of perspective. Even as a kid, he found himself drawn to people who had lived through different generations and carried stories that offered more than surface-level insight.
“I’ve always gravitated toward older people,” he explained. “Hearing about how they grew up and how they see today’s society changes how I think and how I approach things. It gives me a better understanding of the world and how to move through it.”
Those conversations gave him a deeper appreciation for how history is lived, not just taught. Listening to different viewpoints helped him better understand the present and prepared him to approach the future with a broader mindset.
Representation That Inspires
As an athlete, Armstrong has also been inspired by those who have used their platforms to create change beyond competition. While LeBron James has long been an example, Armstrong also highlighted Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown as someone whose impact deserves more attention.
“I think LeBron is up there, but Jaylen Brown is one too,” Armstrong said. “He doesn’t get enough credit for the impact he’s had on society and the money he’s pouring into not just himself on the court, but also onto the projects that he’s been establishing off of the court.”
To him, what stands out is not just their influence, but their willingness to invest in causes that extend beyond themselves.
The Power of Visibility
Representation has played a meaningful role in shaping how Armstrong sees the evolution of sports, especially as diversity continues to grow across both the men’s and women’s game.
“I think it’s changed the game, especially for Black athletes,” he said. “We’re seeing more diversity not just in club teams or college teams, but with the women’s national team as well.”
He pointed to the impact that Black women and women of color have had in helping push the visibility of women’s sports forward, often without recognition for the sacrifices made behind the scenes.
“When you’re watching TV or on social media and you see someone who looks like you, it inspires you and makes things feel more possible,” he added.
That visibility continues to shape both current and future generations.
Opening New Doors
Armstrong has also seen firsthand how sports have created opportunities that once felt out of reach.
“In the past, you didn’t see as many Black athletes at certain colleges,” he said. “Now we are seeing a lot more diversity at places we might not have before.”
That shift has helped create environments where athletes feel welcomed not just for what they do on the field, but for who they are off it as well.
Carrying History Forward
For Armstrong, honoring Black history is not something that begins and ends in February. He believes it shows up in everyday actions, from continuing conversations to supporting Black-owned businesses in the communities where he plays.
As Loudoun United FC recognizes Black History Month, Armstrong’s reflections highlight the importance of community, representation, and continued learning. His perspective serves as a reminder that history is not just something to remember once a year, but something to carry forward every day.
