Loudoun United came out aggressive in the first half Saturday night, but a patient and more experienced Indy Eleven offensive attack was able to complete the comeback victory on the road, winning 2-1. The loss moves Loudoun in to 13th place in the eastern conference.
The match was fast-paced from the opening kickoff, with both teams getting some chances at striking first. For Indy, Thomas Enevoldsen snuck a pass in to the box for Dane Kelly, who ripped a shot that went just wide left of the net in the seventh minute. The two connected again just a minute later, as it was Kelly leading a pass across the box for Enevoldsen, who turned and fired a low shot that forced a diving save by Loudoun’s Colin Miller.
Loudoun was able to take full advantage of their first opportunity in the 12th minute. Forward Kyle Murphy made a cross field pass to midfielder Andrew Lubahn, who cut to his left and let go a booming strike from 20 yards out that found the upper right corner of the net. This gave Loudoun an early 1-0 lead.
Loudoun’s defense continued to bend but not break in the first half, as Indy had another opportunity on a Dane Kelly break away in the 30th minute. Kelly took a lob pass from Enevoldsen but couldn’t poke his shot passed the sliding Miller, who positioned himself beautifully to make the save. Loudoun led 1-0 at the half, despite getting out shot nine to three.
Indy continued their relentless attack in the second half, as they dominated offensive possession (28 total shots, 11 on target) and eventually got rewarded in the 65thminute. Dane Kelly created yet another chance for himself when he cut from right to left in to the box, and booted a shot that deflected off of Loudoun defender Nelson Martinez and passed Collin Miller. Indy finally broke through the Loudoun defense, equalizing at one.
Fatigue started to set in for both teams in the final 20 minutes of the match, as pace of play slowed down significantly. But right when it seemed like both teams were going to head home with a 1-1 draw, Indy’s offensive patience paid off in the 87th minute. Miller was able to make the initial save on a low Dane Kelly shot, but Tyler Pasher scooped up the rebound and danced around the goalkeeper to find a wide open net, and put the nail in Loudoun’s coffin.
Miller had a busy night in his first start of the season, saving nine of 11 shots on target and keeping Loudoun in the match.
Loudoun United look to pick up their first win at Audi Field next Friday, June 28thas they take on Atlanta United 2.
