LEESBURG, VA (May 14, 2024) – Loudoun United FC announced today the club has acquired defender Matai Akinmboni on loan from D.C. United of Major League Soccer for the remainder of the 2024 season. Akinmboni will be available for selection in the club’s contest on Tuesday night against North Carolina FC. Under the loan agreement, D.C. has the right to recall Akinmboni at any point of the season.
“Matai [Akinmboni] is a very gifted ball playing center back who can break lines, and his athleticism will allow us to play a high line,” said Head Coach Ryan Martin. “He is a great young man with a tremendous future. I am excited that Loudoun will be the next part of his journey.”
Akinmboni, 17, joined the Black-and-Red on Aug. 31, 2022 as the 20th Homegrown Signing in club history. He signed a three-year deal through 2025 with options in 2026 and 2027. The Maryland native made his D.C. United debut at 15-years old on Sept. 10th, 2022 in a 0-0 league tie to Real Salt Lake and was the third-youngest player in MLS history to make his debut, trailing only Freddy Adu and Alphonso Davies. In total, Akinmboni has appeared in nine matches for the Black-and-Red.
The defender initially signed an academy contract with Loudoun United FC in the United Soccer League (USL) Championship during the 2022 season and made his professional debut on March 26, 2022 as an 86th-minute substitute against Miami FC in a 0-0 tie. He played in eleven games for Loudoun United FC across the 2022 and 2023 USL Championship seasons. Akinmboni has also been called up to the United States Youth National Team at the U-17 and U-19 level, making two appearances for the U-19 National Team.
