Loudoun United FC Extend Canadian Defender Kwame Awuah Through 2026
Leesburg, VA. (December 2nd, 2024) – Loudoun United FC today announced that the club has extended 2017 MLS SuperDraft pick Kwame Awuah to a two-year contract through the 2026 season, pending league and federation approval.
Awuah returns to Loudoun United FC after recording 37 starts, one goal, and four assists across all competitions in the 2024 season. The defender, originally signed in 2023, but missed the entirety of 2023 due to a torn achilles injury suffered in the pre-season.
“We are very excited to welcome Kwame back. He showed moments where he could be the best left-back in the league. Overcoming an achilles injury and playing the number of minutes with the quality he did really showed his character.” said Head Coach, Ryan Martin. “With a full year under his belt, we expect him to really become a top attacking left-back in this league and we are just glad it will be with Loudoun United.”
“Kwame emerged as one of the leaders within the group towards the end of 2025 after the devastating 2024 season dealing with injury. We’re excited to see him back to his best self in 2025 & 2026.” – Director of Soccer, Olly Gage
“I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve extended my contract with Loudoun United FC. The unwavering support from our incredible fans and this amazing community, especially through my tough injury, has meant the world to me and fueled my determination to come back stronger. I’m excited for the upcoming season and can’t wait to keep pushing this club forward together! – Kwame Awuah
Awuah joined St. Louis CITY2 as a defender ahead of the inaugural 2022 MLS Next Pro season, following stints at various clubs including the Major League Soccer (MLS) team New York City FC.
The Toronto native played for various youth teams before making the switch to the University of Connecticut men’s soccer team in 2013. In 2015, Awuah signed with his youth club, Sigma FC, and was named to the League 1 Ontario Western Conference All-Star Team in 2016.
Awuah was drafted 16th overall by New York City FC in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. He spent two seasons with New York City FC, appearing in 10 matches before signing for Canadian Premier League (CPL) club Forge FC. Awuah helped Forge FC to two CPL championships, the first one in 2019 and the second in 2020. With over 80 appearances for the Canadian club, Awuah recorded three goals and ten assists.
