Loudoun United are set to face the Charleston Battery in their fifth match of the 2021 United Soccer League (USL) Championship season on Tuesday, June 8 with kickoff set for 7 p.m. EST. Loudoun will look to rebound from the high-scoring, back-and-forth loss they took in their last match and earn three points at home on Tuesday night.
In their last match, Loudoun United lost 3-2 to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC Wednesday, June 2. The Red-and-White could not recover from the two goals they conceded in the first half, and despite a second half comeback they were unable to tie the match and earn points at home. Pittsburgh’s first goal was scored in the 18thminute when Anthony Velarde scored from in-close, and their second came in the 41stminute when a cross from the right wing took an unfortunate deflection off Wahab Ackwei into his own net. Loudoun were unable to find a goal of their own in the first half despite having consistent possession in Pittsburgh’s attacking third during the first 45 minutes. Loudoun United went into halftime down 2-0.
The Red-and-White came out strong in the second half and found their first goal of the match in the 50thminute. A number of quick passes around Pittsburgh’s box led to Jovanny Bolivar finding space right in front of the goal, and he finished with a low effort that went in between the Pittsburgh goalkeeper’s legs. Pittsburgh responded with a goal in the 58thminute when they converted a penalty shot after their striker was fouled in the box. The back-and-forth second half continued in the 70thminute when Logan Panchot fired a low, driven shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner after a perfect lay-off pass from Bolivar put him in position to shoot. The goal was the first of Panchot’s professional career. In the last 20 minutes, Loudoun came close to equalizing on multiple occasions, including having a ball cleared right off the goal line in the fourth minute of added time after numerous attempts on goal from in close. Loudoun were unable to find a third goal and the match ended 3-2 in favor of Pittsburgh.
This will be the third all-time matchup between the two teams. Both previous times these two teams played came in 2019, with Charleston winning the first matchup 2-1 and Loudoun winning the second one 2-1. Both teams are members of the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division of the USL Championship and will face each other four total times during the 2021 regular season.
The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ with coverage beginning at 7 p.m. EST.
