Pawtucket, RI (October 14, 2026) — Loudoun United FC fell 1-0 to Rhode Island FC at Centreville Bank Stadium. Despite holding the majority of possession and pushing for an equalizer throughout the match, the Red-and-White were unable to overcome an early goal from the hosts.
Match Summary
Rhode Island got off to a quick start, finding the back of the net in the third minute with a shot from outside the box to take an early 1-0 lead. Loudoun looked to respond, working its way into the attacking third and creating opportunities to get back on level terms. Abdellatif Aboukoura was active in the opening half, seeing multiple attempts blocked by the Rhode Island defense. James Murphy sent an effort over the crossbar in the 31st minute, before Akil Watts came close to finding the equalizer just three minutes later with a shot from outside the box that narrowly missed the target.
Rhode Island continued to create chances of its own, putting pressure on the Loudoun backline throughout the opening 45 minutes. Goalkeeper Ethan Bandré made a save in the 32nd minute to prevent the hosts from doubling their advantage. Despite opportunities at both ends, neither side was able to find another goal before the break, sending Loudoun into halftime trailing 1-0.
The Red-and-White returned for the second half looking to find a way back into the match. Aboukoura nearly brought Loudoun level in the 56th minute, getting a shot away from inside the box that was saved by the Rhode Island goalkeeper. Loudoun continued to maintain possession and work the ball into dangerous areas, but the hosts remained organized defensively and limited opportunities in front of goal.
Rhode Island was reduced to 10 men in the 78th minute after a second yellow card, giving Loudoun a man advantage for the closing stages. The Red-and-White looked to capitalize, with Rida Zouhir forcing a save in the 83rd minute following a pass from Pacifique Niyongabire. Loudoun continued to press forward in search of a late equalizer, while Bandré made another save deep into stoppage time to keep the deficit at one. Despite finishing the night with more than half of the possession and continuing to push until the final whistle, Loudoun was unable to break through the Rhode Island defense.
Thoughts from the Club
Head Coach Anthony Limbrick on the loss to Rhode Island FC and Aidan O’Connor making his Loudoun United debut:
“I thought we started the game really poorly, not just with the goal, but we didn’t start the way we did last week when we got a foothold in the game and won against Miami. We were really disappointed with the start, and I thought we were second best in the first half. We had a period after halftime where we were the better team, but we weren’t able to capitalize on that. We got the ball into some good areas, but didn’t move it quickly enough or create enough chances. It was probably our worst performance in the last three or four games. On Aidan making his debut, I’m really pleased for him. He’s been through a lot this season. He got injured in preseason and then reinjured himself while coming back. He’s such a good character and a great lad who wanted to do so well this year. We made sure he was fully ready, and the medical team did a great job with him behind the scenes. I was really pleased he could get some minutes tonight. I thought he did reasonably well, considering it’s not easy coming on as a center back in that type of game. We were pushing forward trying to get a goal, which left him exposed at times, but I’m really pleased for him. He’s a top character and deserves this opportunity.”
Midfielder Pedro Santos on the loss to Rhode Island FC and the team’s approach to the final two matches of the season:
“It was a tough game, especially conceding a goal so early. In these types of matches, we have to make sure we don’t give up an early goal because I think that changed the game a little bit. The team tried to push forward and create chances, but to be honest, I don’t think it was our best performance. Still, I think we deserved to come away with at least a point. Looking ahead to Sunday, it’s another game that we want to win. We haven’t been at our best over the last three games, even though we’ve had some good results. We want to finish the season strong, get a win on Sunday and then carry that into the final game of the season. Hopefully, we can finish with two more wins.”
