Washington, D.C. (August 5, 2026) — Loudoun United FC fell 3-2 to Major League Soccer side D.C. United in a midweek friendly at Audi Field. Thor Úlfarsson opened the scoring in the 10th minute before an Academy player added Loudoun’s second goal in the 66th minute during the first-ever meeting between the two clubs.
Match Summary
Loudoun made a quick start and found the opening goal just 10 minutes into the match. Úlfarsson continued his strong run of form by finding the back of the net and giving the Red-and-White an early 1-0 advantage. D.C. United responded with three goals during the remainder of the opening half to take a 3-1 lead into the break.
Loudoun made several changes at halftime as the club managed the minutes of players who featured in Saturday’s 2-0 victory against Hartford Athletic. The friendly also provided valuable opportunities for players who have received fewer minutes this season, along with several academy players.
Loudoun pulled one back in the 66th minute when an Academy player found the back of the net. The Red-and-White continued competing through the final whistle, but D.C. United held on for the 3-2 victory.

Head Coach Anthony Limbrick on the team’s performance and what Loudoun can take into Saturday’s match against Charleston:
“I thought it was a really good occasion against D.C. United and a great opportunity for our players to match up against MLS opposition. We gave a very good account of ourselves and scored first, although we were disappointed with the goals we conceded in the first half. We were also able to manage the minutes of several key players, with most of the group that started Saturday playing 45 minutes. That allowed us to give more time to players who have not played as much, along with three trialists and a couple of young players. Considering we did not have what you could call our full team, I thought we performed very well, and I was pleased with the night. Looking ahead to Charleston, our combination play through the middle, getting the ball into wide areas and delivering crosses into the box made us dangerous. Managing counterattacks will also be important because D.C. are very good in transition, and Charleston may set up in a similar 4-4-2 shape. Hopefully, we can take what we learned tonight and use it on Saturday.”
Midfielder James Murphy on the match and Academy goalkeeper Lorenzo Herrera-Rauda’s opportunity:
“It was an enjoyable match, and I thought we gave a good account of ourselves and played pretty well. There were some positive moments, along with a few things we can clean up and work on as we prepare for our next league match on Saturday. It was a good evening for both clubs and a valuable opportunity for several players. It was also awesome to see Lorenzo get that experience. I do not think people outside the locker room fully understand what he brings to the group every day. He has a positive attitude, works hard and is an important part of our goalkeeper group. With him heading to college soon, it was a special moment for him. Hopefully, he can take what he has learned and the experiences he has gained this season into his next environment and show how good he is. He is a great teammate and a good goalkeeper, and we will miss having him in the locker room.”
